U.S. Air Force Research Lab Summer Faculty Fellowship Program

Eligibility

Faculty

  1. Applicants to the U.S. Department of the Air Force (DAF) Summer Faculty Fellowship Program must be citizens of the United States at time of application. U.S. permanent residents or green card holders are not eligible. Dual U.S. Citizens may apply with an exception to those applying to Directed Energy (RD) and Space Vehicles (RV) Directorate programs. Those applying to RD and RV must be U.S. Citizens only.
  2. Applicants must currently hold a full-time appointment at a U.S. accredited baccalaureate-granting college, university, or technical institution.
  3. Applicants must have a Ph.D in science, mathematics, or DAF relevant engineering disciplines.
  4. Applicants' research interests must be in line with the interests and needs of the various Department of the Air Force Research Facilities. These include the nine Department of the Air Force Research Laboratory Directorates, Air Force Test Center, the United States Air Force Academy, and the Air Force Institute of Technology.   5. Selected fellows are expected to conduct research at an Air Force Research Laboratory Directorate, Air Force Test Center, the U.S. Air Force Academy, or the Air Force Institute of Technology, not at their home institution or any other site.
  6. All appointments are subject to the participant's successful security investigation and approved access to unclassified government information systems.
  7. Beginning in FY2023, there is a three-year tenure limit for the SFFP program.
    • Previous participation before FY2023 is exempt from the three-year limit. If you participated prior to FY2023, those years are not counted towards the three-year limit. E.g., If you participated in SFFP since 2020 the last year you would be eligible for SFFP would be 2025, counting 2023, 2024, and 2025 as the three years counted towards the tenure limit.
    • The three-year limit applies to continuous and non-continuous years of participation FY2023 and beyond.

Graduate Students

U.S. Department of the Air Force Summer Faculty Fellowship Program faculty participants have the opportunity to bring a graduate student with them. Graduate student applications must be completed and submitted to the faculty advisor to be uploaded as a part of their application proposal.

Only a graduate student included in the faculty application submitted by the application deadline may be awarded. Graduate Students who were not included in the initial application process cannot be added or substituted after faculty awarding.

These students must meet the following requirements:

  1. Graduate students must be citizens of the United States at time of application. U.S. permanent residents or green card holders are not eligible. Dual U.S. Citizens may apply with an exception to those applying to Directed Energy (RD) and Space Vehicles (RV) Directorate programs. Those applying to RD and RV must be U.S. Citizens only.
  2. They must be currently pursuing a graduate degree (master’s or Ph.D.).
  3. They must be enrolled in graduate school for the semester following the fellowship program.
  4. They must hold to the same guidelines outlined for their faculty counterparts. (See numbers 4-6 above.)
