  1. I am not a citizen of the United States. Am I eligible for the program?
    • No, only citizens of the United States are eligible for the program. U.S. permanent residents or green card holders are not eligible. This applies to both faculty and graduate students.
  2. Are Dual U.S. Citizens eligible to apply to the program?
    • Yes, dual U.S. citizens are eligible, except to the Directed Energy (RD) and Space Vehicles (RV) directorate programs which require citizenship to the U.S. only.
  3. I would like to apply for the program but do not yet have my U.S. citizenship; however, I plan to receive it before my fellowship begins. May I still apply for the program?
    • No, you must be a U.S. citizen at the time of application in order to be eligible to apply for the program.
  4. Are undergraduate students who will be entering graduate school in the fall semester after the summer fellowship eligible?
    • No, only students who are currently pursuing a graduate degree (either a master's or Ph.D.) at the time of the fellowship nomination are eligible.
  5. Are students who have fully completed their graduate studies prior to the summer fellowship eligible?
    • No, students who have fully completed their graduate studies are not eligible. Students must be enrolled in graduate school the semester after they have completed the summer fellowship.
  6. Are students enrolled in a joint BS/MS program eligible?
    • Yes, these students are eligible, provided they are enrolled in graduate school the semester after they have completed the summer fellowship. (A Graduate Student Application Form must accompany the faculty’s proposal)
  7. Is there a limit to the number of years a professor can participate in the SFFP Program?
    • Beginning in FY2023, there is a three-year tenure limit for the SFFP program.
      • Previous participation before FY2023 is exempt from the three-year limit. If you participated prior to FY2023, those years are not counted towards the three-year limit. E.g., If you participated in SFFP since 2020 the last year you would be eligible for SFFP would be 2025, counting 2023, 2024, and 2025 as the three years counted towards the tenure limit.
      • The three-year limit applies to continuous and non-continuous years of participation FY2023 and beyond.
