Tips for Applying

Advisor Approval

Answer the following questions:

  1. Have you contacted the Air Force lab advisor to discuss your proposal with him/her?
  2. Has your Air Force lab advisor approved your proposal?

Note: If your Air Force lab advisor has not received an e-mail notification regarding your proposal, please ask him/her to contact afsffp.pmo@sysplus.com as soon as possible.

Research Proposal

Answer the following questions:

  1. Have you shared your research proposal with the Air Force lab advisor and have you incorporated his/her suggestions for improvement?
  2. What is the quality of the proposed research and how does it relate to the program being applied to?
  3. Is the proposal relevant to an accompanying graduate student (if applicable)?
  4. If you are a renewal applicant, have you included in your proposal what you did the previous summer(s)?
  5. Have you included a specific list of planned tasks to accomplish within the summer time frame?
  6. Does your proposal include a concrete and descriptive plan for problem solving?
  7. Does your proposal include specifics for how your research will benefit the program you are applying to as well as the students you will be sharing your research with?
  8. Does your proposal include quality graphs, figures, and tables?
  9. Have you read through the web pages of the directorates to learn more about how your proposed research can fit the needs of the directorate?
  10. Have you proofread your proposal?
  11. Does your proposal meet the formatting instructions as listed on the detailed instructions page?
  12. If you are applying for two different programs, avoid using the same proposal for both programs as it will most likely not be appropriate for two different programs.

Curriculum vitae

Answer the following questions:

  1. Does your CV include a clear description of your professional record?
  2. Does your CV emphasize your publications, awards, and honors?
  3. Does your CV emphasize your research outcomes?

References

  1. Does your application include at least one reference from a dean or department head?
  2. If you are a renewal applicant, is one of your references your Air Force lab advisor from the previous summer?
  3. Have you chosen references who know you well and can offer a strong recommendation?
  4. Have you chosen references who are recognized in their field?
  5. Have your references had sufficient time to submit a strong letter on your behalf? (Please keep in mind that references do not receive a link to upload their materials to your account until you have added them to your application.)
  6. Have your references successfully submitted their reference materials? You can log in to your account to check the status of the supporting materials for your application. If it is nearing the deadline and your references have not submitted their materials, you should contact them directly to discuss this matter with them. Materials received after the deadline will not be accepted.

Note: If one or more of your references has not received an e-mail notification to serve as a reference, please ask him/her to contact afsffp.pmo@sysplus.com as soon as possible.
